Students Across the State

Like many professional educators, Mr. Harms’ decision to become a teacher stems from his own experience when he was a student. “I saw the changes my teachers [had] on students,” he says, “and wanted to do the same.” He has been a teacher since graduating college in 2018, joining Iowa Connections Academy in 2024.

As someone who works with special education students, Mr. Harms recognizes that online schooling presents a unique opportunity. Many of his students have come to Iowa Connections Academy because “the traditional style of education didn’t work,” he explains. Mr. Harms particularly enjoys being able “to help students across the state”—far more students than he could in a typical local brick-and-mortar school.

The Value of One-on-One Instruction

The key is the individualized nature of the Iowa Connections Academy experience. “Specially designed instruction,” Mr. Harms says, “is in a one-on-one setting.” It allows him “to really get to know [his] students,” which is especially important when working with those with special needs.

Outside of school, Mr. Harms enjoys following sports of all kinds as well as spending time with family.

You need to do what is best for your student in the environment that will help them the most!
